Hurricane Ophelia Heading For British Isles
The season’s 10th hurricane and it is the 10th consecutive hurricane has developed today as Ophelia has strengthened. Satellite presentation has improved all day long. A ragged eye has appeared and disappeared and is likely to appear again tonight. Top winds are 75 mph and Ophelia could strengthen a bit more over the next 2 days. Ophelia is far out in the open waters of the Eastern Atlantic and not moving very much today.
Now as far as where Ophelia is headed, we actually have to look toward Europe and specifically the British Isles. Ophelia is going to eventually start moving to the northeast and then northward and accelerate toward the British Isles Sunday night and Monday.
Weather models this afternoon have shifted a little further east and bring either Ophelia or more than likely the extra tropical or non tropical cyclone that Ophelia becomes very close to Ireland on Monday. History shows us that while it isn’t common for tropical cyclones to hit Northwest Europe and the British Isles it is not rare. There have been numerous instances of tropical cyclones or their remnants to impact the Northeast Atlantic. Some have even eventually found their way into the Arctic regions.
