Humberto Grows Larger Hurricane Watch Bermuda

New Tropical Depression Forms Central Tropical Atlantic & Tropical Storm Imelda Texas Coast.

Suddenly we have three tropical cyclones out there as Humberto continues to grow larger as the wind field expands. Satellite pictures show a large cloud filled eye but the storm has become more symmetrical and a Hurricane Watch is now posted for Bermuda due to the larger wind field and the stronger southern side of the hurricane.

Humberto is located a little over 500 miles to the west southwest of Bermuda and it is moving east northeast at 8 mph. At the current pace and the expectation that the storms motion may pick up a bit, weather conditions over Bermuda will begin to deteriorate during the day Wednesday with the storm center forecast to pass north of Bermuda sometime Thursday morning.

Meanwhile out in the Central Tropical Atlantic a low pressure area has become better organized today as strong thunderstorms have developed in and around the center of circulation so we now have Tropica Depression 10 which is about 1150 miles east of the Leeward Islands. It is moving west northwest at about 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. Conditions are favorable for strengthening and this system is likely to become a tropical storm later today or tonight.

The current forecast track from the National Hurricane Center brings this system close to the Northern Leeward Islands on Friday as a hurricane. Right now it is forecast to pass just north of the Northern Leewards, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico but this is going be dependant on an upper high to the north and the lingering trough from Humberto that will attempt to weaken the ridge. This could impact the track in either direction either further north or south so it will be monitored closely.

We now also have Tropical Storm Imelda which just formed this afternoon right along the Southeast Texas coast. This system has developed from the upper low that has been in the Gulf of Mexico for a week and has moved across the entire Gulf to the Texas coast. Judging from the radar loop from Houston the circulation is coming ashore now to the south southwest of Houston and west southwest of Galveston near Freeport. Winds are gusting close to tropical storm strength. Galveston was sustained at 30 mph gusting to 36 mph during the last hour.

The biggest threat from this system will be heavy rains to Southeast Texas and Flash Flood Watches are posted for much of this area.
