Hot Humid Weather Into Wednesday
Severe Weather Risks As Cold Front Arrives
Today is the hottest day of the year (so far) and it is possible that it could wind up being the hottest day of the upcoming summer! Since highs yesterday away from the ocean reached middle to upper 90s in some places, there is absolutely nothing to stop it from happening today and this may even include areas closer to the coast thanks to more of a southwest wind. I would not be surprised if someone gets to 100 degrees today.
All of this daytime heating under a strong May sun into an increasingly unstable atmosphere could lead to some pop up thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating the possibility for isolated severe thunderstorms from Northern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey to New York City, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut northward. Higher risks lie across Northern and Western New York.
SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES
WEATHER RADAR
Once we get past sunset, thunderstorms will weaken and die out overnight with most lows in the 60s. Wednesday we are setting up for another hot day but it will be slightly “less hot” with sunshine into the afternoon and highs reaching the low and middle 90s. An approaching cold front will mean a higher probability of thunderstorms and severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a marginal risk from West Virginia and Virginia, northeast up the Interstate 95 Corridor to Southeastern Massachusetts and everyone in between.
I would not be surprised if we see an upgrade in the risk from “marginal” to “slight” risk by the Storm Prediction Center. The front puts an end to 90 degree highs and sets us back temperature wise Thursday and Friday. We could see clouds and showers linger into Thursday morning before the front pushes far enough south to allow for gradual improvement in sky conditions. Friday will be dry but are setting up for rainy conditions beginning Friday night and lasting into at least part of Sunday thanks to a warm front moving northward and low pressure heading to the Lower Great Lakes. There is chance for improving weather conditions for Monday Memorial Day.
