Coastal Flooding Threat Continues
Wind Threat Diminishes
With the track of Hermine continuing to move east and no sign of a northwest hook I think at this point we can safely say that the threat from Hermine is reduced. The only issue in my view now really is the coastal flooding and that there might be some strong winds over Eastern Long Island and parts of the south shore of Long Island. The rain threat which never was a big deal to begin with is all but gone except for Eastern Long Island and the offshore waters.
The coastal flooding threat is also diminished to some degree. The track offshore will mean a surge including tides of up to 5 feet in some places. This will cause moderate coastal flooding and perhaps some isolated pockets of major coastal flooding. However unless there is a sudden large westward shift (highly unlikely) wide spread major coastal flooding would be a surprise.
The new storm surge forecast above is for the high tides Monday morning. The highest tides will be 3 to 4 feet above normal based on this storm surge model along the New Jersey, Western Long Island Sound, and in New York Harbor near Staten Island’s south shore.
With regards to winds, they will be gusty along the shore with some stronger winds to gale force over Eastern Long Island. No widespread gales are expected. No rain is expected other than possibly over Eastern Long Island during Monday.
My suspicion is that tropical storm warnings may be taken down for some areas this evening.
