Heating & Cooling (Again) As Front Passes

Heating & Cooling (Again) As Front Passes

Heating & cooling processes in the atmosphere continues though lately it has been more about heating then it has been about cooling. Considering how cheap heating oil is right now the upside is that as long as temperatures remain above normal we use less heating oil. However given world market prices, if it were colder, at least you can heat on the cheap. There were records set today and here are a few so far.

This is the one and only day of record highs in this stretch as a cold front now approaches from the northwest. An ice storm is raging across parts of the Mid Mississippi Valley with rains on the eastern half and ice on the western half. Overnight we should see nothing more than just clouds with temperatures in the 40s to lower 50s. Im not anticipating any fog tonight with the clouds coming in overhead. That should prevent the radiation conditions we had last night and early this morning.gfs24 heating & cooling

The front is going to move slowly through the area from north to south with a diminishing area of showers so for Saturday I think nothing more than a spot shower will occur. Temperatures are a tough call as it will depend on when the wind shifts to the north. Northern areas will see that wind shift earlier and temperatures might stop at the lower 50s while southern areas from Central New Jersey southward might make upper 50s to lower 60s and parts of Southern New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania might see mid 60s before the front passes. Saturday night may see a little wave on the front which could mean a few showers from Central New Jersey south.

That little wave which you can barely find on the map will accelerate the front further south on Sunday. 40s will be the highs northern areas which would be areas north of New York City and Northern New Jersey while it may still be in the 50s south of there for a brief time. Any clouds will give way to some sunshine Sunday with southern areas the last to clear out. Chilly air will be the story for later Sunday and Monday with lows Monday morning in the 20s to lower 30s and highs Monday only in the 40s with some sunshine. Showers will approach on Tuesday ahead of the next cold front. Still no big storms on the horizon though models keep hinting at an offshore low at the end of next week. At this point it really is a little early to begin a guess. Temperatures much of this week will be either near normal..or perhaps a little above normal on Tuesday into Wednesday ahead of the next front.
