Harvey Showing Signs of Life Heading Northwest
Latest satellite loops show that the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey are getting better organzied now that it has moved into the Northwest Caribbean. The cloud mass appears to be moving west northwest to northwest. There is still time for this system to aquire tropical storm strength before making its first landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula. Model track forecasts continue to shift northward toward the Texas coast.
The water vapor loop shows the strong upper air storm in the North Central Gulf of Mexico is moving northward and weakening which is causing upper level winds in the area to relax. The key will be what happens when it emerges into the Gulf of Mexico. Conditions are favorable for development. If the northwest track emerges, it will take it over a longer water route which gives this time to become a hurricane as it approaches NE Mexico & South Texas.
Elsewhere we still ahve what is left of the tropical wave now over the Bahamas. This area will be sitting here for the next several days and late this week with a stalled front to the north of it, conditions could become favorable for developement here. Global weather models suggest an offshore track ultimately but with a big high building to the north, it will probably create a long duration onshore flow event from the Southeast coast to Southern New England. This is something we will need to monitor over the longer term.
