Gusty Winds Cold Weather Thanksgiving Day Into The Weekend
Getaway day for the Thanksgiving holiday is not going to be too problematic. We had rain overnight but that is gone now. Two cold fronts have to pass. the first will have the risk for a couple of showers later this afternoon. The second and more consequential front passes through tonight and once that goes by much colder air will begin to arrive. However for today we will see clouds, and perhaps a few breaks of sun with the risk of one or two showers late in the day. Highs will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Skies should partially clear overnight and northwest winds will begin to increase as the pressure gradient tightens up. Most lows Thursday morning will be in the 30s to near 40 degrees. Thanksgiving day will be a cold and windy day with ineffective sunshine, winds gusting to 35 mph at times. Temperatures will be going nowhere with highs mostly in the low to mid 40s and we will drop to the 20s in most places Friday morning.
Low pressure in Eastern Canada will strengthen Thursday night into Friday and so will the winds. We may be borderline wind advisory criteria for Friday. We will have sunshine but you can expect winds to gust to 35 or even as high as 40 mph. Temperatures Friday will only reach the upper 30s and lower 40s which is about 10 degrees below the seasonal average.
The cold weather lingers into the weekend with Saturday morning lows again in the 20s to near 30. Saturday dayside will see sunshine but most highs will only be in the lower 40s. The good news for Saturday is that the strong gusty winds will finally begin to ease as the core of the cold air mass moves overhead.
Sunday we finish off the holiday weekend with increasing clouds and the risk for showers later Sunday into Sunday night though models seem to be backing away from a widespread consistent rainfall. Another cold front is set to pass through. Temperatures ahead of the front should be able to rise to the upper 40s and lower 50s in most places.
We will be watching this weather front carefully next week as it stalls across the Gulf States. Colder air will return next week and wedge into the Northeast and Mid Atlantic so there is the question of whether a wave develops on this weather front and heads northeastward up the coast for later Tuesday into Wednesday with precipitation. Rain at the coast and snow inland seems the most likely solution at this early stage but there are questions regarding whether cold air overwhelms the wave and suppresses it to the south.
