Gloom & Doom Rain Into Sunday Afternoon
But Somewhat Better Monday Memorial Day
I have said this many times over many years. Memorial Day weekend is the one weekend of the so called summer vacation weekends where you are going to lose at least 1 or 2 of the days to adverse weather of some sort. This year it is the “curse of the onshore flow” that has taken hold and that wipes out much of today and Sunday. We are looking at an inch and a half or more of rain. In some places it will be over 2 inches before this is all said and one.
Meanwhile today we have the perfect recipe for a miserable day. The flow is onshore thanks to low pressure to the west, a stalled front across North Carolina and Virginia, and a strong high just east of Cape Cod. Itis wedged into the Appalachians which means east winds all day, at times gusty along the coast, cloudy skies, and rain on and off of varying intensity. Temperatures today are going to struggle in the 50s at best.

The front is going to buckle somewhat tonight as low pressure develops on the frontal boundary and makes its way to the northeast. Rain continues overnight and it could become moderate or even heavy at times during the early morning hours into daybreak. Temperatures overnight will hold steady. Sunday look for the rain to continue into midday and then gradually end from west to east during the afternoon. Highs might make it back into the 60s with a little luck.
The low pulls away to the east and offshore Sunday night and that should allow for some improving weather conditions to settle in for Monday. We are going to go with the idea that Monday will be mostly dry for most people in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. However we will have to throw in the chance for some scattered afternoon showers as an upper trough moves across the Northeast.
We should have some sunshine in the mix though and high temperatures should easily make it back into the 70s just about everywhere. Clearly Monday is the best weather day of the holiday weekend. The drier weather trend will continue for much of next week and it may remain on the cool side of normal for the second half of next week. This will be thanks to a storm system in Atlantic Canada and a northerly flow along the US East Coast. There is no sign of extreme heat coming back anytime soon.
