Gloom & Doom On & Off Rain Continues into Tuesday,

Slow Improvement Late Week

Another day of gloom and doom is ahead of us and not much has changed since yesterday. The remnant low of Ophelia is sitting off the New Jersey coast today. The northeast flow continues which will keep things raw and dismal. Radars are picking up areas of rain that are to the north and will be shifting southeast as the day wears on. There is no hope for sunshine today. Highs will just be in the 60s. Some places north and northwest of the coast may barely get to 60 today.

High pressure in Southeastern Canada will be hanging around in that area through at least the middle part of this week. The problem is trying to get that high to build far enough south into the Eastern US. Building southward would push clouds and moisture further south and bring back at least a day or two of sunshine.

This is clearly not happening today nor is it happening Tuesday as weil continue to sit in clouds and there will be some on and off rain possible into Tuesday afternoon. After that we do see the high to the north building southward, at least enough to finally push the frontal boundary further south. In the meantime lows tonight will be in the 50s in most places and highs Tuesday will again be just in the 60s.

The rain area will be shifting to the south and east later Tuesday and moving offshore. The high to the north should build far enough south to allow for some clearing later Tuesday night. Wednesday we have our fingers crossed that we will have a nice day of at least some sunshine. High Wednesday will be in the 60s.

Wednesday will be a break from gloom and doom as the high moves offshore and we get back to a moist easterly flow. The longer nights means clouds will likely return but there should still be enough dry air around for at least some breaks of sun during the day Thursday with highs again in the 60s.

Also there will likely be a weak low that develops off the Mid Atlantic coast to help throw back some moisture Friday. For now we will call for at least clouds coming back. Highs will be in the 60s. The high will eventually settle along the East Coast and with a little luck, and as long as we don’t see some sort of low develop offshore, we could see some sunshine return for the weekend.

Rainfall today and Tuesday will be variable. Some areas could see over an inch of rain while others will likely see far less. The good news about the rain that we have seen since Saturday is that it has been spread out over 3 days and has not caused any serious flooding issues. The heavier rain seems to be concentrated over Northern New Jersey to the Lower Hudson Valley, Southwest Connecticut and Long Island and this is spread with some today and some Tuesday.
