Gloom And Doom Continues Mother’s Day Slow Improvement During The Week

Happy Mother’s Day on what is another day of gloom and doom from Southern New England to the Middle Atlantic States. Our coastal storm which has brought rain of up to several inches in some places over the course of the last 2 days is starting to show signs of weakening and, more importantly, drifting to the south. To the northwest in Upstate NY and Northern New England there is lots of dry air and it is waiting to move southward. However not today as we will sit in lots of clouds all day long. There will still be patches of light rain or drizzle. Highs will probably struggle back into the 50s.

Tonight we will have leftover clouds but well north and west of the coast we could start to see skies at least partially clear. Lows will be in the 40s. Monday I will be guardedly optimistic and call it cloudy to start at the coast and partly sunny inland, and then gradually becoming partly sunny near the coast and mostly sunny inland. I will still be watching the satellite loop for clues regarding the progress of the cloud line. Temperatures should immediately bounce and reach into the 60s inland but still holding in the 50s near the coast.

Temperatures should continue to trend higher moving up a little each day. We will have mostly ocean winds all week which slow down the pace of warming. I get nervous with a high to the northeast and a long ocean fetch that some low clouds could come in at night and into the morning hours especially along the coast. Inland I think we see no worse than partly sunny skies. Tuesday highs will reach into the 60s in most places except the immediate coast.

As the week progress the high to the northeast gradually builds back westward. The upper low and remnant storm to the south are still creating an ocean flow but it is weakening. That should allow temperatures to climb higher a little each day. We should reach into the lower 70s Wednesday in most places with partly to mostly sunny skies.

The low will remain trapped off the Southeast coast which should put us in a good spot Friday and probably into the start of next weekend. We are going to see some sun to finish the week and Friday should be the warmest day of the next 5 days. Highs will reach 80 or better inland north and northeast and 70s in other places to the south and southwest.

It is a bit of an upside down pattern thanks to the blocking pattern but that is what happens especially this time of year. It is much warmer as you go north because of dry air and sunshine and cooler as you head south due usually to clouds rain and an east wind. At leas we will go through the next 5 days with hardly any rain once we are done with today.
