Get Ready For Rain Late Tuesday Into Wednesday Some Thunderstorms Possible

WEATHER IN 5 PODCAST MONDAY 9/28/2020

For much of the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states it has been 17 days since it last rained. The lack of rain has been particularly acute in Southeastern New England where we have extreme drought conditions thanks to an almost rainless summer. South of NYC conditions are close to normal despite the dry 2 week plus stretch. A cold front is coming and it will bring an inch or two (some places more) of rain with the bulk of it Tuesday night and  Wednesday. The beginnings of the setup are on the satellite with tropical moisture building in the Southeast US and heavier clouds and showers well to the west in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.

Other than the fact that it is warm and humid nothing much happens tonight into Tuesday morning with lows tonight mostly in the 60s. Weather conditions will start to deteriorate Tuesday with some scattered showers. They will become more numerous in Eastern Pennsylvania as the day wears on and then it shifts east to the coast as low pressure develops on the approaching front.

The loop above shows the strong trough that is play here. The dark orange and brown spots show areas of strong gusty winds at the 18,000 foot level. These strong jet streaks will play out at the surface in the form of clusters of heavy rains and some thunderstorms. In fact notice how the trough “tightens” up as it moves into New Jersey early Wednesday morning. East of that axis expect some thunderstorms to develop and I would not at all be surprised if some of these storms wind up getting strong. There might even be an isolated sever thunderstorm in the mix too.

The highest chance for these storms would be along Coastal NJ as well as into Southern & Central New England and possibly Long Island as well. This lends support to the idea of a couple of inches of rain from this. That should at least make a dent in the dry conditions.
