Flash Flood Watch Most of North New Jersey NW of 95, Eastern Pennsylvania. Hudson Valley, NYC, Long Island & Connecticut
Flash Flood Watch is now posted with the approaching cold front and storm system that will be moving northward along the Appalachians Friday night into Saturday when we will see the bulk of the rain. There is potential for some areas to see a couple of inches of rain out of this but the rain will likely band up from north to south leaving some areas with maybe about half as much. It is hard to pinpoint exactly where the heavy rain bands will set up so the course of least regret is to cover a large geographic area. Not much if any rain should fall between now and later Friday afternoon. The western track of the low will keep the bulk of the showers and downpours to the west until overnight Friday into Saturday afternoon.
SATELLITE
We are seeing split conditions with two worlds this afternoon. On the satellite loop the north south orientation of the next storm system is obvious. Where the clouds are east west from the Great Lakes to New England are north of a warm front that is literally cutting our area in half. To the north of the warm front is NYC and areas north and east where temperatures are in the 50s. To the south of the warm front it is sunny with temperatures in the 70s to near 80!
On the regional radar we don’t see much happening over us. There were a few passing showers north of the warm front but they have come and gone rather quickly. South of the front there is nothing of consequence. The front should continue to push northward this evening and tonight as it heads to Central NY & Central New England for Friday morning.
REGIONAL RADAR
Don’t expect much to happen overnight and even during the dayside on Friday other than some passing brief showers that will be scattered around. Temperatures Friday will be in the 60s along the coast and in Southern New England but could reach middle to upper 70s inland in the Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania We will wait until Friday night for the heavy downpours to swing in from the west and that will last into Saturday afternoon in most places. Watch also for the possibility of thunderstorms in the mix and the Storm Prediction Center has the marginal risk reaching to just south of NYC for Friday into Saturday morning.
Downpours some of which will be heavy will begin to move out from west to east from midday Saturday and through the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the 60s to near 70 on Saturday. Then we look ahead to improving weather conditions Easter Sunday but it won’t be a perfect day. Cold unstable air aloft and an upper trough could produce some passing showers but there could also be some breaks of sun in the mix with highs in the 60s.
COASTAL FLOODING POSSIBLE AT HIGH TIDE ESPECIALLY FOR SOUTH FACING SHORELINES
A full moon and tight pressure gradient along the East coast is going to create a strong southerly flow later Friday into Saturday morning. Combine this with a full moon and there is the risk for minor to possibly moderate coastal flooding at high tide for shore areas so bear this in mind. Some coastal flooding has already occurred with today’s high tides and this risk continues into Saturday morning.
