First 90 Degree Highs New Jersey Thunderstorm Risks Thursday Wind Machine Friday

It was all about how much sun and whether Mr Sea Breeze would have a say in some coastal areas. There was some outperformance today with the temperatures. The first 90 degree highs popped up on the maps today in parts of inland New Jersey. Many areas hit the mid to upper 80s. Meanwhile south and east of I-95 the sea breeze did eventually work its way inland. The 101 is an obvious error.

Some high clouds are streaming in from the northwest as we have a weather front approaching. This front is going to stall Thursday on a line from about Allentown to NYC to just off the south shore of Long Island (plus or minus about 25 miles or so). This will have its impacts. First off we will need to watch for a shower or thunderstorm later tonight as the front nears. There are numerous showers and thunderstorms going on well to the northwest in upstate NY and they will be sinking southward. It will be a matter of whether they hold together or not.

Thursday’s forecast remains a challenge with the front stalled out from west to east cutting the forecast area in half. North of the front from Northeast Pennsylvania to Northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Southern New England we will see clouds and some showers and possibly a thunderstorm from time to time. Highs will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

South of the front from Southeast Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey it will be a warm and somewhat humid day and that front could trigger off some thunderstorms along with a marginal risk for severe weather which has been nudged a little further to the east by the Storm Prediction Center. Highs in this zone will reach into the 80s.

The low will move northeast into New England and strengthen and that brings drier cooler air in for Friday. It will also turn the wind machine on and I anticipate wind advisories going up for much of the area  from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and points north with gusts up to 40 mph possible during Friday. There should be some sunshine however with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Watch for another passing shower in the afternoon as a strong upper trough moves by.

The weekend still looks good though it will still be rather windy into Saturday morning before the winds start to ease somewhat. Look for some sunshine Saturday with highs mostly in the upper 50s and lower 60s. We see a little warm front moving by Saturday night and it is back to west winds and some sunshine Sunday with highs reaching into the 70s.
