Winter Weather Advisories Northwest of the Coast

We now have Winter Storm Warnings that have been expanded to include the coastal and southern New Jersey counties. Winter Storm Warnings have also been expanded to Suffolk County on Long Island as well as Eastern Connecticut. Winter Weather Advisories cover much of Massachusetts, Western Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley, NYC, Western Long Island, the northern half of New Jersey, Eastern and Southern Pennsylvania southward into Maryland and Delaware.

With the warnings expanded, we also have increased snowfall amounts forecast over much of the area by the National Weather Service and they even nudged their numbers a little higher inland where advisories are posted. I think the coastal numbers stand a better chance of getting hit than the inland numbers with this. The system moves quick so it is basically a 4 to 6 hour event though as the storm slows down as it moves off the New Jersey coast and south of Long Island, we might get an additional couple of hours of snow and that could nudge amounts a little higher there.

Snow on the radar is moving through West Virginia and about to move into Southern Pennsylvania. It will continue to spread eastward at a steady pace. Inland areas will see it snow sooner than the coast as the coastal areas will have to wait for the low to start developing when its offshore. That isn’t going to happen until sometimes between 4am and 7am Friday.

This is a six to 8 hour event from start to finish so there won’t be time for much more than forecast unless the storm intensifies faster and closer to the coast which is unlikely but not impossible. Windy and colder conditions follow with Friday highs in the low to mid 30s. Saturday morning lows as skies clear will be in the mid teens to around or just over 20. Saturday look for sunshine with highs reaching just into the 30s. Sunday brings an approaching arctic front and stubborn cold air so we could have some freezing rain issues. We will address the next system after this storm is overwith.
