Developing Coastal Storm Brings Rain Later Today Through Thursday

Memorial Day Weekend Outlook

Weather conditions across much of Southern and Southeastern New England south to the Northern Mid Atlantic will or already has deteriorated as low pressure moves eastward into Ohio today and a trailing cold front extends southward into the Southeastern States. This low is going to redevelop tonight off the Delaware coast and then head very slowly northeastward, straddling the coast of Southern New England tonight and Thursday.

This is going to be a raw chilly stretch of weather as winds increase from the east and northeast. Rain is showing up on regional and local radars and while it might struggle for awhile today to push through Southern New England and Long Island it will eventually make it through. Temperatures today are going nowhere and once it starts raining, we will see temperatures generally settle in the upper 40s and lower 50s. The word for the day is raw!

Nor’easter conditions will develop along the coast where gale warnings are going up however while it may get breezy at times, we do not expect it to get overly windy and we do not have any wind advisories or high wind watches up at this time. Nor do we expect them to go up. The gradient will be tightest over Long Island, Coastal Southern New England and the over Southeastern New England. It is in this area where winds could gust to 30 to 40 mph at times especially near the coast.

We are forecasting between an inch and an inch and a half of rainfall from this storm area wide from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Rain continue overnight and become heavy at times and we will likely see rain last through at least part of Thursday. Most of the rain will begin shifting to the northeast during Thursday afternoon and evening but overall we are talking about a rather miserable raw day of northeast winds and temperatures that once again, while it is raining will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s.

Weather conditions are forecast to only slowly improve. While Friday we will see only showery rains from time to time and from place to place, there will still be lots of clouds and a rather cool northeast or north wind. Temperatures will probably nudge higher to the upper 50s and lower 60s but there will be little to any sun in the mix.

The Memorial Day holiday weekend starts Saturday with clouds mixing and some sunshine mixing in but it will tend to be a bit on the self destructive side thanks to the a cold unstable atmosphere aloft. We will call it a partly sunny day or a mix of sun and clouds. We can not rule out the possibility of scattered passing showers but I tend to think that it will be dry for most people much of the time. Temperatures will nudge a little higher as we reach the low to mid 60s by Saturday afternoon.

Sunday we should see a little more sun, a little less cloud cover and we are leaving showers out of the forecast. In general it should be no worse than partly sunny with highs reaching the mid and upper 60s. Monday Memorial Day will be a nice day of sunshine to start but there is an upper trough that will swing through New England and drop southward so we will need to keep an eye on this in case it means some scattered shower chances. Highs Monday will reach the upper 60s and lower 70s. I’m sure there will be some adjustments to the holiday weekend forecast in the coming days so expect a few changes but nothing radical.
