Colder Air Next Few Days Wintry Mix Friday North

After a nice day of clouds and sun and temperatures in the 50s, we are going to see a gradual chill down over the next few days. A weak weather front will be moving through overnight with not much with it other than a few passing clouds. Temperatures will probably not fall too far into the upper 30s. Low pressure in the Gulf States is moving east and we can see the clouds from this system though this will be passing by to our south with little or no consequence to us.

Wednesday looks like a nice day with sunshine and a few clouds but with colder air gradually filtering in temperatures won’t be going anywhere with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s. High pressure will be building to our north Thursday into Friday so colder air will continue to drain southward. Thursday’s highs will be only in the mid to upper 30s.

FRIDAY MORNING FORECAST LOWS

colder

Thursday night into Friday morning with a north northeast wind we will see lows drop into the 20s to near 30 Friday morning which is important because a warm front will be setting up to our south. Combined with a disturbance moving from the Great Lakes to New England Friday this opens us up to the possibility of a wintry mix of snow sleet and rain during the day Friday. Warm fronts are always tricky propositions because where and how they set up dictate where precipitation falls.

GFS FORECAST 1PM FRIDAY 12/22/2017

snow ice

Weather models this afternoon were actually in fairly close agreement with this idea that the GFS presents for Friday afternoon. The European model was in fact a bit colder in its view. It would suggest a wintry mix of snow sleet or freezing rain from Northeastern Pennsylvania, Northwest New Jersey (north of Route 80) the Hudson Valley north of Route 287 and into Connecticut north of Route 15. Weather models were trending south with this so how cold it gets by Friday morning will be critical.

GFS FORECAST FRIDAY SATURDAY 12/22-23/2017 CLICK TO ANIMATE

colder snow

Friday is a big travel day ahead of Christmas Eve & Christmas Day so any snow or ice could be problematic. Note that for coastal areas and basically from NYC & New Jersey south of Route 78 won’t see anything other than light rain and a bit of sleet unless this moisture wedges a bit further south than currently being shown. Of course this could all shift northward as well so for now we rate this a toss up as to which way it goes. Either way we will see rising temperatures into Saturday as low pressure heads to our west and we get into rain. Temperatures will be headed through the 50s to near 60 Saturday with the rain ending Saturday night when the cold front passes.

SUNDAY MONDAY CHRISTMAS EVE & CHRISTMAS DAY

colder snow

The chance for a White Christmas is there with some snow possible Sunday night into Monday morning. What we can say at this point is that this doesn’t appear to be anything major and that if it times right, most of the snow will fall overnight into Christmas morning and be done during the morning hours. It may be just enough snow to leave a mantle of white on the landscape. Saturday’s front stalls and low pressure develops on it with some snow. Weather models are gradually coming into better agreement on this though there is still a bit of variability here. We have tons of time to watch this and see how it plays out. There is the possibility that cold air overwhelms everything and we don’t see much if anything at all. The new GFS late this afternoon shows exactly this. It is a rather tight needle threading event. Part of the problem with this is that the core of the cold air moves more south than east so we need to see at least some of that cold air wedge its way east to the coast but not too much otherwise it pushes everything south. Too little and everything winds up west and north.
