Cold Front Showers Thunderstorms Friday Colder Over The Weekend

A cold front is on the way but we still have one more decent day to enjoy before we deal with showers and thunderstorms on Friday. The first change today is the wind direction as high pressure moves off the coast of New England and our winds turn south southeast. This is going to result is lower temperatures today with our air coming off the cool ocean. Most highs will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Sunshine will give way to some arriving high clouds ahead of the cold front but no rain is forecast today nor for the first part of tonight.

Tonight the atmosphere will saturate and clouds thicken. There might be a passing shower overnight into Friday morning before the showers and thunderstorms from the west start to move in. Temperatures will be in the 50s overnight.  By morning showers and thunderstorms will have moved into Eastern Pennsylvania and they will proceed to move to the east.

Look for some heavy downpours from mid morning into lunch time and then the rain will move from west to east. There could be a few thunderstorms in the mix. Showers will end in Eastern Pennsylvania by midday and over Long Island and Southern New England by late afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 3/4 inch to an inch or so seems like a good bet with some locally higher amounts possible from any embedded thunderstorms. Highs Friday will be in the 60s. Winds will be gusty at times especially along the coast with south winds up to 30 mph or so. No severe weather risk is being indicated by the Storm Prediction Center this morning and I would think other than the isolated stronger thunderstorm in the mix, severe weather will be minimal.

Weather conditions will improve Friday night into Saturday but more clouds will develop Saturday because the upper trough is lagging the cold front. There could be some scattered showers in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures Saturday will be in the 50s. The GFS model loop seems a little overdone with the showers on Saturday so we will stay with the idea that they will be more scattered in nature.

As a series of upper troughs and cold fronts move through temperatures will be declining as each trough goes by. Saturday’s highs will be in the 50s. Sunday will be colder with a bit of a gusty breeze and in and out sunshine. Highs will be just in the 40s. Another upper trough moves through Sunday night into Monday morning and there could be a few showers with that. The system for Monday morning comes with a very cold pool of air aloft and it its not out of the question that inland areas could see a little wet snow mix in as the trough goes by. Monday will be a very chilly day indeed with highs just into the 40s in most areas. Winds will be on the gusty side making it feel colder. By Tuesday morning we will be in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Tuesday we should see some sunshine with highs just in the 40s. Another warmup comes Wednesday and Thursday night week followed by another cold front late next week.
