Cold Front Severe Weather Risk Parts of Northeast Northern Mid Atlantic Today

We have a warm front that is struggling its way northward today toward upstate NY and Southern New England. Clouds are dominating the satellite view today as this warm front tries to make progress on its northward journey. A cold front will follow it tonight as low pressure moves through upstate NY and New England. This creates an area of severe weather risk from Southern NY and the Catskills south through Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey and then further south into Maryland Delaware and Virginia.

We will see some scattered thunderstorms develop in the severe weather risk zone this afternoon and the marginal risk being indicated means that there could be an isolated severe thunderstorm or two. Otherwise the day will be one of changeable sky conditions ranging from cloudy, to occasionally some brightening of skies and even a few breaks of sun.

The best chances for any sun breaking through will be in Central and Southern NJ, Southern Pennsylvania south to Maryland and Delware where highs could reach the low to mid 80s. From NYC north and east highs will be in a range of 75 to 80 degrees due to cloud cover.

There will be some showers and downpours tonight that some areas will see and they could last into Tuesday morning. However low pressure in Upstate NY moves to into Northern New England we should begin to see improving weather conditions Tuesday afternoon as winds turn to the northwest. Look for decreasing afternoon clouds with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.

Cool dry Canadian air will be heading southeastward Wednesday through Friday and the coolest air will arrive Thursday night. Wednesday we see sunshine and a few passing clouds. Highs will be in the upper 70s to some lower 80s. We will cool off at night to the 50s and lower 60s.

Thursday will be a nice pleasant sunny day with highs mostly in the middle to a few upper 70s. Then to coolest part of this new air mass will build in and send temperatures down to the 40s in many inland areas by Friday morning while warmer urban centers will be in the pleasantly cool low to mid 50s.

Friday will be the coolest day of this stretch with lots of sunshine and most highs just in the low to mid 70s. There might be a few inland areas that struggle to get to 70 degrees. All through this starting Wednesday we will see collapsing humidity that stays with us into the start of the weekend.

This next zone of high pressure will settle into the Mid Atlantic states and that should make for a nice last weekend of summer. Low pressure could develop off the Southeast US coast but even if it does, it looks to get ejected eastward and will probably not be a factor in the weekend weather. Humidity levels will probably come up a bit but it should be reasonably comfortable as highs reach 75 to 80 Saturday and upper 70s and lower 80s Sunday.
