Cold Friday Weekend, Active Pattern Lies Ahead Through Christmas

We have made it to the end of the week as we stare outside the window at the arctic tundra. Snow and ice covered areas everywhere does give us a nice snowy scene as Christmas nears. In a year like this one has been, snow before Christmas to me is a good thing. If it only didn’t have to come with very cold temperatures.

Most lows were in the teens to low 20s this morning but we have a sunny day ahead for the most part. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 20s to lower 30s and the wind will be a little less busy today than it was yesterday.

There are no major changes in the forecast for the weekend. We have another cold night ahead with clear skies. Morning lows will be in the teens and lower 20s. Some single digit readings are possible thanks to good radiational cooling conditions. Saturday should be the better of the two weekend days with sunshine. HIghs will be mostly in the low to mid 30s.

Sunday brings a cold front and a little southern energy that gets involved. We will probably be borderline temperature wise in the atmosphere. Look for lots of clouds with the chance for a period of rain or snow showers Sunday. The GFS is the most bullish on this idea but even here the precipitation doesn’t amount to much. Highs will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Another wave develops to the south on Monday but this should stay away from us to the south and east. We see a mix of clouds and some sun on Monday. Highs again will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Another front passes taking us to Tuesday with some sunshine and colder temperatures. Highs Tuesday will be in the 30s.

Wednesday looks like a sunny day with highs into the 40s. Now comes Christmas eve with an approaching cold front. However unlike yesterday models are evolving with this system and we will talk more about this later this evening. Also the models overnight show a distinct active pattern in the coming two week period. I maintained yesterday that the pattern was bullish for opportunities for snow in the long range and if anything, today’s runs are even more supportive to that idea.
