Cold & Dry Through Saturday Snow Developing Saturday Night Into Sunday

The immediate coastal plain is the one area in the Northeast US where there has not been an accumulating snowfall. That will end this weekend as low pressure and an arctic boundary heading east across the Ohio Valley will bring a period of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning. The Weather Prediction Center forecasters are indicating a 50 percent or higher probability of at least 2 inches. Expect snow to arrive late in the evening Saturday across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and will end between 7 and 10am Sunday in most places.

Ahead of this we have a dry Friday and a dry dayside Saturday. Gusty northwest winds will ease somewhat today as low pressure to the northeast moves away. There is a disturbance moving across Virginia today but that system is weakening and won’t see any issues from that. Skies today should be no worse than partly sunny but it is going to be cold  with most high temperatures today in the low to middle 30s.

Skies should at least be partially clear tonight with Saturday morning lows mostly in the middle to upper 20s except well to the north where we will drop into the teens. Saturday any early sunshine will give way to increasing clouds as an arctic front pushes through and stalls to the south. High temperatures Saturday will be in the 30s to near 40. Snow develops Saturday evening between 7pm and 10pm and becomes steadier overnight. It will then end Sunday morning. Temperatures will fall into the 20s while it is snowing and probably stay there all day Sunday even after the snow ends and sky conditions improve Sunday afternoon.

Track of the low and the amount of precipitation the system generates will be key to accumulation amounts. Falling temperatures add some fluff factor to the equation so I think that 2 to 3 inches over much the area along and south of Interstate 95 is a good bet. Amounts will be lower as you head north and northwest in the Hudson Valley and Northwest New Jersey. Higher amounts are possible from Southeastern Pennsylvania and across Central and South Jersey. Very cold weather starts of next week but we will see a moderation in temperatures later in the week as the cold pattern we have been in relaxes.
