We continue to see Cold April Weather Coming for next weekend and into the very beginning of next week. Weather models continue to signal this however there has been some adjustments in the upper flow. The core of the cold air on the last several weather model runs have backed away from the more extreme cold. However even though it won’t be on the extreme end of the range, temperatures will still average 10 to 15 degrees below normal Sunday into Monday of next week. Also it seems pretty clear that the cold will pull out rather quickly as we saw during the winter time. Cold shots didn’t last for more than a day or two and this one will be no different. Also the time of year works against very cold air lasting for more than a few days.

Cold April Weather Coming Euro Upper Air Tuesday Morning
The core of the cold air with the polar vortex moves down Sunday into early Monday morning. However as the second map for Tuesday shows the polar vortex in the area of dark blue pulls out well to the east by Tuesday morning. Also the ridge of high pressure in the west which is driving all this in the upper atmosphere weakens considerably. This cuts off the flow of polar air and deflects it to the east into Eastern Canada and Northern New England.

Cold April Weather Coming Thursday Temperature Anomaly
Monday morning will be the coldest time frame with temperatures bottoming out about 15 degrees below normal. This should put temperatures in the 20s just about everywhere. But notice that by Thursday of next week, temperatures are already moving 5 to 10 degrees above normal. This means that we should be easily back into the 60s by the end of the week. And while both the Euro model and the GFS model show a weak disturbance coming through early Tuesday with some precipitation, we are at the time of year where I’m just not going to get worked up over anything until we are inside 84 hours. If it is still showing something when we are inside that time frame, or if other factors change, then I might discuss it. But for now it is not worth the energy.
