Coastal Storm Developing Will Pass Offshore Rain Coast Tonight

The satellite loop this morning is showing the strong short wave trough swinging across the Southeast US with a rather healthy looking satellite signature. The trough is moving eastward and about to make the turn northeast. Low pressure is beginning to develop off the South Carolina coast. Everything is on course. High clouds will start to arrive later this morning and this afternoon from south to north but no rain is forecast during the day at least. We can also see the northern fringe of that rain on the regional radar loop advancing through North Carolina and soon to enter into Southern Virginia.

Temperatures today will reach the upper 40s to lower 50s for the highs so the below average temperatures continue though at least the winds from yesterday have eased. They will turn northeast to northeast later today and tonight as the low move northeastward from the North Carolina coast. Overnight models continue with the offshore track which puts the back edge of the rain to about or just west of NYC and coastal New Jersey before it shuts off. Very little rain wall fall once you go west of the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey

While this storm will get very strong offshore being on the northwest fringe means rather light rainfall amounts overnight with the highest over Eastern Long Island and Eastern Connecticut. Gale force winds will be mostly offshore so there is no real issue there. If you didn’t know there was a strengthening offshore this really is no big deal. Rain threat will be roughly from 8pm to 8am and for most of the area the rain will be gone by daybreak Wednesday and shortly after that in eastern areas of Long Island and Connecticut. Wednesday looks nice with developing sunshine with highs reaching the 60s with a gusty wind.

Nice weather continues into Thursday with sunshine and some late day arriving clouds with highs in the upper 50s to some lower 60s. Then we have the next weather system for Friday as a weak low heads to the Lower Great Lakes and an onshore flow puts in line for a raw rainy Friday with most highs just in the 40s to around 50. This doesn’t look especially heavy but it will just be one of those gloomy spring days we have come to expect here in the Northeast US.

As long as things move along we should see improvement over the weekend however there is no guarantee of this and it looks to be far from picture perfect. Right now we will call for a mix of sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with temperatures at least in the 60s both days. 70s are not impossible for Sunday afternoon if there is enough sun and the next cold front is slower to reach the coast. The GFS continues to rush showers to the east by Sunday evening while other models are slower and hold back the showers until later on Monday.
