Coastal Flood Warning Into Friday As Hurricane Erin Moves Northeast

Hurricane Erin is moving away from the North Carolina coast today and heading to the northeast as well advertised for many days. We are dealing with issues of gusty winds along the coast and that will continue today and tonight. Winds will gust to 20 to 30 mph inland and along the immediate coast, winds will be gusting to 40 mph or more.

The biggest issue from Hurricane Erin is the impact on the coastline. We have coastal flood warnings in effect from Delaware to Long Island. Coastal Flood Advisories are posted for the Long Island north shore, the south shore of Connecticut, Westchester County and the the shorelines surrounding New York City including the New Jersey counties that lie along New York Harbor. Moderate to, in some cases major coastal flooding is possible at the high tides this evening and again Friday morning.

WEATHER RADAR

In the meantime with all this going on, even though the day starts out in the land of gloom and doom with low clouds drizzle and some fog, we will see improving weather conditions this afternoon as winds turn northerly and that brings down drier air. We may see a slow decrease in cloud cover. Temperatures today will likely hold in the upper 60s to lower 70s but dew point should start to ease later this afternoon on the northerly wind. Skies will clear tonight with most lows Friday morning in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

The weather Friday through the daytime Sunday should be fine. Hurricane Erin of course will be long gone but it may take a few days for seas to calm down and they may not get back to a calmer state until at least Sunday. This means beach conditions will be volatile with rough surf and rip currents through Sunday. However skies should be no worse than partly sunny each day.

The flow remains onshore Friday and Saturday so that will put a cap on how high temperatures will go. Humidity levels however will be low through Saturday and that is one upside from Hurricane Erin in that it drags dry air over Eastern Canada southward. Highs Saturday will reach the lower 80s inland with 70s to near 80 degrees along the coast. Sunday likely will be about the same though dew points will be coming up a bit. We have a cold front approaching but showers and thunderstorms with that likely don’t approach until Sunday night and we will see that front hanging around Monday with a continued risk for some showers.
