Cloudy Day Ahead One More Round of Showers Ground Hog Super Bowl Sunday

If the pattern is going to be a warm one this time of year, then it will behave outside as it would in the springtime when we have to deal with low clouds and an onshore flow on a daily basis. We have lots of clouds around to start the day. The coast got an overnight grazing of rain but that rain area has moved on to the east. Temperatures today will hover in the 40s all day long. Some thin spots in the cloud cover could allow for some breaks of sunshine but we have one more area of moisture to get through.

The regional radar is showing rain offshore and clearly that area is moving out to the east so no worries there. There is a patchy of precipitation nosing in from West Virginia and that could move overhead tonight.

With tonight’s upper air disturbance moving along we will see the chance for maybe a few showers. Temperatures will eventually settle in the 30s. Then Sunday which is Ground Hog Day (winter is over and then into a 350 degree Viking oven). and Super Bowl Sunday. Party travelers have no issues other than to enjoy themselves and hope that a safety doesn’t ruin their Super Bowl boxes. Expect an uneventful day of clouds with some breaks of sun with highs mostly in the 40s.

Warm air arrives on Monday with some sunshine. Highs will reach the mid 50s to near 60 around NYC and into the 60s south and west of Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. 70 degree readings are possible in Washington and Baltimore. We should see some sunshine helping out and the west wind will keep the sea breeze at bay except along the immediate coast.

Some Rain Over Night Possible, Clouds Saturday Into Sunday Warming Up Monday

After Monday we will start to see some changes as cold air starts to return to the interior Northeast. This could set up for snow sleet and freezing rain issues well to the north of the I-95 Urban Corridor. The first wave pushes through Tuesday with some showers and a cold front. That front stalls to the south of NYC and PHL on Wednesday with another wave moving along it.

There is absolutely no blocking whatsoever that could force this wave further south. In fact the weather pattern is such that we have a super strong fast flow of low pressure in the North Atlantic pushing the elusive North Atlantic Oscillation index (measures blocking vs no blocking) to off the wall positive. This means weather systems both highs and lows just move in and out quickly with lows tracking more to the west and north of the coast. The southern extent of frozen or freezing precipitation later this week will hinge on how strong the highs are to the north. Otherwise for snow lovers at the coast the snow drought continues with nothing in the cards through at least mid month.
