Christmas Snow Odds Increase Some Areas

We are beginning to get a little more clarity on the possibility of some snow Sunday night into Monday morning and it seems that there will be some snow though the questions of where and how much are still a bit of a mystery. I think at this point it won’t be anything big but it might be just enough to make White Christmas lovers happy but not too much to get in anyone’s way. First off we have a good looking Thursday underway with sunshine today as high pressure builds down from New England. It is a chilly start to the day and most highs will be in the 30s to near 40. The satellite loop shows just a few clouds north and northwest moving through. Other than that there are no weather issues to worry about today or most of tonight. Clouds will be on the increase tonight as a warm front begins to set up to our south. Those clouds now moving through the Upper Midwest will be getting here overnight and Friday morning. Lows tonight will be in the 20s to lower 30s.

Late tonight in Northwest New Jersey & Northeast Pennsylvania we could see a light wintry mix develop but this is likely to be patchy in nature and not widespread. During the day Friday it will be cloudy and inland areas may have a tough time getting above freezing for awhile so any light patchy precip could be wintry in nature until temperatures rise. The greatest risk for this would be  along and north of Route 84 from Pennsylvania & NY into and through Connecticut. Much of upstate NY & New England will see some snow and ice out of this but for us temperatures will continue to rise and it will be rain. Don’t expect too much rain Friday into Friday night. Then a cold front nears Saturday and we should see some rain from this before the front moves through. Temperatures Saturday could reach into the 50s but in South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania 60s are possible before the front comes through Saturday evening.

SNOW POSSIBLE CHRISTMAS EVE NIGHT INTO CHRISTMAS MORNING

We are beginning to see a bit of clarity in the situation regarding snow for Sunday night Christmas Eve into Monday morning Christmas Day. Low pressure is going to try and develop offshore as some energy swings out of the Midwest. The European & Canadian paint the most robust White Christmas scenario for areas just north of New York City as it develops a coastal low just offshore. The European would argue for a 3 to 6 inch snowfall along and just north of Route 84 with 1 to 3 inches down to the Connecticut coast west to north and west of 287 in New York & New Jersey but just rain south of Route 78.

CHRISTMAS SNOW GFS MODEL

Here is a look at the GFS map for snow accumulation into Monday morning. The darkest blue is where very little will accumulate. The lighter blues I think is where we will see some snow on the ground by Christmas morning. This will be done by mid morning and we will see some breaks of sunshine developing Christmas afternoon with temperatures in the 30s. Next week looks to be cold and there will be more snow threats later next week.
