Calmer Day Ahead Clouds Scattered Showers Week Ahead Outlook

Between the severe weather that developed during the afternoon Saturday and the thunderstorms that movede through last night, it seemed just about everyone participated in what was a very active Saturday. Low pressure is sitting overhead today and rain that is over New England exits to the northeast as the day wears on. We are left with leftover clouds on the satellite and that will be the issue today. The best way to describe Sunday will be cloudy to occasionally partly sunny.  The atmosphere is more stable today so we will just throw in the chance for scattered showers. The best chances for any scattered showers will be from Route 80 northward in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and north of Route 84 in the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. To the south of that line, one might see a scattered shower sneak in but the chances are rather low.

Since we are only going to see limited sunshine today temperatures will probably hover in the upper 70s and lower 80s for highs. Unfortunately this weather system is not provided any relief in the dew point department so humidity levels will remain stubbornly high today and it will be uncomfortable though the temperatures will take the edge off slightly.

The week ahead has us locked into a slowly strengthening northwest flow in the upper atmosphere. Today’s cold front will get pushed further offshore but that will be followed by upper troughs and weak cold fronts moving southeast from Canada. There isn’t a whole lot of humidity relief that can be derived from this pattern because something seems to be coming through every day.

The best way to approach the forecast for the week ahead is a general one for every day. We will call it cloudy to partly sunny for each day this week. We will throw in the chance for scattered thunderstorms for each day with the best chances coming late Tuesday ahead of a front and trough and again late Wednesday and finally Friday. Thursday may be the one day where thunderstorms might be minimal. As far as temperatures are concerned, Tuesday looks to be the one day where we could see highs in the mid 80s to near 90. For the other days this week highs will be in the 80s. As far as severe weather is concerned, Wednesday and Friday could offer chances for stronger storms.

Longer range we continue to see troughs dropping into the Eastern US as high pressure aloft persists in the west and southwest. Heatwaves will develop and continue in the Western US while here in the East temperatures will be closer to average for late July. The persistent troughing in the Eastern US is going to become a better deliverer of humidity relief if the pattern holds through August. On the other hand if troughs keep dropping into the Eastern US when the tropics start heating up, this could be a concern. For now the tropics in the Atlantic remain quiet but we suspect activity will be picking up in the coming weeks.
