Blow Torch Pattern Record Highs Saturday No Sustained Cold Through Next Week

Some areas woke up to the noise of ice scrapers thanks to a coating of snow and ice overnight. Other areas not so much but we did have a cold December day for sure. Clouds have masked much of the sunshine this afternoon and that has held temperatures in the upper 30s to around or just over 40 for highs. This is another transient cold air mass and we are setting up for a blow torch Saturday of record highs. In the meantime we have to get there and not much will be happening along the way.

The leading edge of the warm air is producing light snow to the west on the radar and most of that is aloft. I’m not expecting any precipitation is we transition into a warmer air mass so lows tonight will be mostly in the upper 20s to lower 30s with patchy clouds around all night.

Warmer air starts to arrive on Friday but it will take time before the warmest air gets here on Saturday. Friday wlll be a partly sunny day with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. A warm front will be passing by Friday night and that puts into the blow torch air on Saturday.

Much of Saturday will be no worse than partly sunny and with a southwest wind, temperatures have no where to go but up. Many areas will reach 65 to near 70 and some record highs are possible. Since the cold front holds off until evening, the dayside should see enough sun to challenge records from Southern New England south to the Middle Atlantic states. Some showers will come through with a cold front Saturday night but those showers will be long gone by Sunday morning.

Sunday brings another one of those transient cold air masses so we will be back into the 40s with sunshine and a gusty breeze. The cold shot is short lived and all of next week will be dry and warm. Some days we could see record highs getting challenged again depending wind direction and how much sun. Hardly any rain is forecast all week and there are no signs of a pattern change anytime soon.
