We are coming up on the 19th anniversary of the Blizzard of 96 and thank you Nicholas Thomas for posting this on my facebook page. This is wonderful because I was never able to save any of that work. I will never forget the experience of working on air for almost 36 hours straight. I thought all of this stuff disappeared and here it is!
That blizzard was really the first big storm here since the Blizzard of 1983. The 93 Superstorm on Long Island left about 10 inches. The years from 1970 to 2000 were a snow drought with only 5 of those winters producing above normal snowfall and the others produced much below normal snowfall winters and even winters with snow amounts in the single digits. That year I measured 96 inches for the season which included 16 inches that fell in mid April! I remember coming home after it was over and my driveway and walkway had not been touched for the two days of snowfall. Exhausted I began to use my then small snowblower to get through the over 2 feet on the ground. Thankfully a town truck came by and for 10 bucks he drove up my driveway and cleaned it up in 2 swoops!
The Blizzard of 96 was unique in a number of ways but one thing that stands out for me was that it showed up on the models 10 days before and the models nailed it from day 1. That does not happen too often. The winter of 1995-96 was unrelenting from the first 4 inch snowfall at the end of November to the last one in mid April. In those days you did absolutely everything and most of it was from scratch. I never had a better time nailing a forecast days before and then playing the whole thing out on the air! I’m so glad I have this. Thank you to Hurrff!!!
