Bitter Cold Saturday Winter Storm Warning Sunday

Heavy Snow Sleet Some Rain Coast & South

Winter Storm Warnings are up for Sunday and we are seeing the set up today. Arctic air has overwhelmed the Northeast and Mid Atlantic. We also have lots of high clouds rolling in. Temperatures this morning bottomed in the single digits and we will likely not get much higher than the low to mid teens. The arctic high will move into Upstate New York tonight and into New England Sunday, setting up a winter storm that is developing today in the Deep South and eventually making its way to Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England Sunday.

Snow will develop during the early morning hours Sunday in Northern Virginia and Maryland and then quickly spread northward, reaching Philadelphia and vicinity around 4am, New York City around 7am and Southeastern New England around 11am or so. There is plenty of low level cold air however due to the tracking of a primary low into the Central Appalachians, a warm layer will be surging northward up the coast and the mid levels of the atmosphere and that will cause the heavy snow to eventually change over to heavy sleet during the afternoon from south to north.

Areas just barely inland of the major cities Philadelphia and New York will stay all snow and these areas are likely to see a foot or more of accumulation. National Weather Service snow forecasts amounts for the coast are probably a few inches too high due to the change to sleet. Up to a few inches of sleet could accumulate on top of the snow fall. Even with less snow for the coast, this storm will create serious travel issues.

You can expect to see some additional forecast adjustments between now and Sunday morning. This storm will exit the Northeast Sunday night and weather conditions will improve across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England Monday though it remains very cold.
