Bitter Cold Air Moving East Rain Super Bowl Sunday

We began the day deep in the freezer with bitter cold temperatures in the single digits and low teens across much of the region. The latest shot of bitter cold air is now beginning to move out to the east. We will see temperatures rebound somewhat today with highs back to the upper 20s and lower 30s with plenty of sunshine. Yesterday’s busy wind continues to diminish reducing wind chill issues in most areas.

US SATELLITE

storm free

The satellite picture shows some clouds to the south across Virginia to Delaware extending northwestward back to the Great Lakes & Plains. Clouds will arrive here later this afternoon and then increase and thicken tonight. Temperatures tonight won’t fall very far in the 20s in most places and perhaps upper teens in the coldest spots north and northwest. No activity of consequence is expected on the radar today.

REGIONAL RADAR

storm free

Sunday the next storm approaches and basically tracks to the west and north of the coast. Across Pennsylvania to Upstate NY and interior New England it will be mostly snow. For our neck of the woods it is mostly rain though areas well north and west of the coast could start off as snow or a mix.

NAM SNOW FORECAST SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

This looks to me like a general 3-6 inch snowfall along and west of the mountains. Eastern Pennsylvania will be on the eastern most edge of the snow at the start with a coating to a couple of inches before it changes to rain. Rain on the coast could be higher as a secondary low develops off the New Jersey coast. This I think could create an area of heavy rain for Long Island and parts of Southern New England Sunday evening.

NAM RAINFALL FORECAST SUPER BOWL SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING

The rain ends Sunday night and it will be long gone by Monday morning. Monday into Tuesday will be colder but dry and then the next weather system come in with rain for Wednesday though it may start out as snow or a mix. Rain might change to sleet or snow toward the end but we will deal with possibility early next week when things become more clear.
