Below Zero Temperatures Likely Sunday
New York City has not seen below zero temperatures in 22 years. That drought may be coming to an end. We have what could be a near perfect set up for below zero readings not only in New York City but in all areas of the northeast. Temperatures Sunday morning are likely to be below zero as far south as Washington DC. Temperatures in the interior northeast are likely to drop to -10 to -25 all across the northeast.
Below Zero Temperatures Likely Sunday GFS SUNDAY MORNING LOW TEMPS 7AM 2/14/2016
The map above is the new GFS overnight run. The European has been showing below zero temperatures for days for areas from Southeast Pennsylvania to Southern New England. The GFS model has finally woken up to that reality. This is truly a brutal air mass that is coming down out of Canada. The colder European actually had -10 readings down as far south as Southern Connecticut to just north of White Plains NY and into Northeastern Pennsylvania. The overnight GFS run brings near zero temperatures down near Washington DC Sunday morning.
As we talked about in our JOESTRADAMUS post yesterday the key will be the wind. If it is north straight down the Hudson Valley then New York City will break its 22 year drought of temperatures not going below zero. The record low for Sunday February 14th is 2 above set back in 1916. That record has a good chance to be broken. The all time record low is -15 set back on February 9th 1934. That record is likely to remain standing.

Long range offers some chances for precipitation next week once the cold air pulls out. We will discuss this in detail later on Wednesday.
