Beautiful Thursday Rain Arrives Later Friday into Saturday Holiday Weekend Forecast

The day after heat humidity and thunderstorms, we are enjoying a beautiful day of sunshine, warm temperatures and lower humidity. The satellite picture shows just a few patchy clouds scattered around the Northeast. We will be partly to mostly sunny for the rest of the day. The radars are nice and quiet and should remain so into Friday morning. Temperatures this afternoon will top out between 80 and 85 degrees. We should be clear tonight. Most lows overnight will be in the 50s.

Friday begins the downhill slide of sunshine early followed by arriving clouds. Low pressure is headed our way from the Ohio Valley and will take a track east southeast to Chesapeake Bay by Saturday morning. Rain will arrive from west to east during the afternoon west of the coast and then north and east of NYC for Friday night. The first surge of rain should be done by Saturday morning. Most highs Friday will  be in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The problem with the pattern for the weekend is this stubborn upper low that forms and settles just to our west. We were hoping that the system would weaken and get pushed east in time to save Sunday and Monday. The risk was that the upper low would having around to our west and create a southwest flow along the coast. It keeps a frontal boundary stalled out just offshore and until the upper low gets out of the way, weak waves of low pressure will develop. This will keep us in clouds and raw conditions on Saturday with highs not getting out of the 50s in most locations. Along the coast rain will occasionally bulge back westward bring rain just inland of the coast. Inland areas might see much rain but it will remain overcast all day.

That wave in North Carolina will move north northeast to off the New Jersey coast during Sunday. This leaves us in cloudy skies through Sunday. Again there will be some patchy rain Saturday night into Sunday. The rain areas will be such that it won’t be raining everywhere all the time. Again we are looking at a mostly raw day. Rainfall amounts through Sunday morning will be in the range of 3/4 inch to 1.25 inches. Sunday’s highs will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

This wave should be the last one of this series because the upper trough weakens and finally gets out of the way Sunday night and Monday morning. This should allow for some improvement for Monday Memorial Day. We could see some clouds early but we should see a gradual decreasing cloud cover and slowly increasing sunshine. The afternoon should be better than the morning. No rain is forecast for Monday. Temperatures will still be cool with most highs in the mid 60s to around 70 depending on how fast clouds break apart. I was originally hoping that systems would move along and that Sunday would be the transition day and Monday would be a nice sunny day. This doesn’t appear to be in the cards. We will probably clear out Monday night and start Tuesday with some sun before the next upper trough moves along with clouds and the chance for showers late in the day or Tuesday night.
