Another Very Warm Record Breaking Day

Ahead of Showers Storms & Severe Weather Risks

Yesterday was an incredible day of sunshine and record high temperatures. Many areas saw their first highs of 80 degrees for 2026 and we look to have a repeat performance today since temperatures are starting the day in the 50s in many locations. This is an effective launching pad and with sunshine giving way to some clouds later today, there is plenty of time for highs to reach the mid 70s to around 80 degrees inland. Coastal locations once again though will struggle with temperatures settling 15 or more degrees lower during the afternoon and early evening hours.

We do have a cold front approaching for tonight that is going to set off some showers and thunderstorms as it crosses Western and Central Pennsylvania south to Maryland and Virginia. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a marginal risk reaching New Jersey which means the chance for isolated severe thunderstorms. Slight risk is indicating in yellow meaning a higher chance there could be some severe thunderstorms running around.

There is the possibility that these thunderstorms could spin up a few isolated tornadoes and it seems a bit early for that sort of risk to happen but when you have a stretched atmosphere with record warm temps and some dynamics aloft you certainly have to indicate the possibility. 2 to 5 percent risk is being indicated for areas inland from New Jersey to Pennsylvania and points south into Maryland Delaware & Virginia.

We don’t expect any showers during the day though one or two could pop up late this afternoon or evening inland. Overnight into Thursday morning is when we will see showers from the cold front along with a possible thunderstorm or two. The front will move offshore Thursday morning and that will put an end to the very warm temperatures we have been experiencing.

You can expect showers to linger through the morning and as colder air arrives, don’t be surprised if a few wet snowflakes mix in over some inland spots. Northerly winds will be increasing bringing down that cold air. The highs for the day will be leftover from temperatures after midnight and  Temperatures will be falling through the 40s Thursday afternoon and sky conditions should improve from west to east.

Friday morning lows will be in the upper 20s to mid 30s. This is a fast in and out shot of cold air because the next storm system in this fast flow will be moving east across Southern Canada with a warm front going by to our north. South winds will take hold and there will be clouds around with highs in the 40s to around 50 degrees. Saturday is looking to be the better of the two weekend days with sunshine and highs back into the 50s. A major storm is forecast to develop over the Great Lakes Sunday and Monday with a trailing cold front. We will see showery rains develop Sunday night and showers and thunderstorms will be around Monday. Very cold air (for this time of year will arrive for a dry windy and cold Tuesday which is Saint Patrick’s Day!
