Another Very Warm Day Ahead, Cooler Air Follows Weekend Should Be Mostly Dry

After what was a warm sunny Wednesday we will follow it up with another warm sunny day for today. Yes we do have a cold front approaching but as the satellite picture shows, clouds are still a long way away so we should be fine for the dayside today. Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 70s everywhere and like yesterday some places will touch or even break 80 degrees and that could take out a few record highs locally. Radars are showing showers in Upstate NY moving northeastward so those showers aren’t coming here. Later today some showers and thunderstorms will develop in Pennsylvania but they will be well to our west.

The cold front approaches and moves through late tonight. Most of the showers and thunderstorms will die out before they get here. There is the outside chance for an overnight shower or thunderstorm after midnight but most of you won’t see anything. Lows will be in the 50s to lower 60s.

Friday we will begin a stair step decline in temperatures that will continue through the weekend. The front will be just offshore and in a holding pattern as it waits for an upper trough to swing through from the Great Lakes. The front is weak and won’t be active so it should be no worse than partly sunny. Highs will be about 10 degrees lower than today, reaching the mid 60s to around 70. The decline continues on Saturday when another front approaches from the northwest and instability from the upper trough puts us in clouds and there is the risk for a passing shower. Highs will be mostly in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Sunday should be a dry day. The GFS is rushing clouds and rain eastward rather quickly and it seems to me to be a bit overdone. The European shows high pressure north of the Great Lakes building southward and suppressing the rain well to the west. We tend to lean to the idea that the dayside Sunday should be dry with sunshine giving way to some high clouds. Highs again will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

The differences in the two models continues into next week leaving a lot of uncertainty. The GFS would have it raining Sunday night and Monday as low pressure develops offshore and puts us in a northeast flow around it. The European is more suppressed and further southeast leaving it mostly dry for at least Monday and it develops the low offshore further south. Some rain would get here Monday night into Tuesday. Both models seem to indicate that a more important storm system and cold front will head to the Eastern US later next week.
