Another Round of Severe Weather Possible Today & Thursday

Flood Watches Posted

We have another steam bath day across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and we have another day of shower and thunderstorm risk. However we have additional risks to deal with. The Storm Prediction Center has indicated a 15& chance for severe thunderstorms across Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey south into Maryland Delaware and Virginia.

We have also had multiple days in a row of thunderstorms moving through and this has saturated much of the ground across the Mid Atlantic states. The Weather Prediction Center has a slight risk (15 to 40% chance) for flash flooding over a large area that covers New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania and runs up and down the Eastern Seaboard to Southeast Georgia. A moderate risk (40 to 70% chance) exists over parts of Virginia and North Carolina.

WEATHER RADAR

Not much has changed regarding the progress of the day. We start off warm and steamy and go to hot and steamy. Humidity levels remain high with dew points above 70. High temperatures will reach the upper 80s and lower 90s. The atmosphere is very unstable and another upper trough rippling the flow aloft sets off some downpours and thunderstorms. The highest risk time will be during the afternoon and evening hours.

The overall pattern remains rather static across the Eastern US and we are basically in a wash rinse repeat mode for the next 5 or 6 days. Upper air disturbances are rippling along in the flow from west to east and we do not have a strong enough flow from Canada to bring down a dry air mass even a for a day or so respite from the high humidity. This puts us in “wash rinse repeat” mode on a daily basis at least through Sunday.

Later tonight and for much of Thursday we will see areas of downpours and thunderstorms around. Once again we will be dealing with the risks for flash flooding and river flooding. We also have elevated severe weather risk. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms Thursday but the higher risk I believe comes from areas of heavy rain.

Temperatures Thursday will be in the 80s with a south wind keeping it a little cooler along south and east facing shorelines. Friday through Sunday it is more of the same with some sunshine, very warm and very humid conditions along with the risk for scattered thunderstorms. Highs each day will be in the mid 80s to near 90 degrees with temperatures a little lower along the coast.
