Air Quality Issues Red Flag Warnings & Scattered Thunderstorm Risk Late Today

We have a mix of weather issues today and they include the continued flow of smoke from Canada wildfires. The northerly flow around a strong storm system near Nova Scotia continues to bring a smokey haze southward and this has prompted ari quaility alerts for NY State, Long Island and most of New England. In addtiion we have very dry conditions and that opens the door to wildfire risk Red Flag Warnings are up for much of New Jersey and a fire weather watch is up for much of Pennsylvania.

With all of this going in we should emphasize that much of the day should be okay sky wise with sunshine or partly sunny skies. Temperatures today will actually rise a little higher with highs reaching the upper 70s to a few lower 80s. The rotating nearly stationary storm near Nova Scotia is sending down spokes of energy southeast and one such spoke or short wave trough will approach late today and this evening from the north. This could trigger some scattered showers or thunderstorms.

The cold air aloft could create a stronger storm or two but on the whole this does not appear to be a widespread severe weather event. These scattered storms will pop in the afternoon and last into the evening and then move out offshore. Skies should partially clear tonight with most lows in the 50s.

More dry air will head southward Wednesday since nothing in the atmosphere is really moving. If you are in the right spot, that means long stretches of dry weather and that is where much of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic are sitting. Look for sunshine Wednesday with highs in the 70s. Note there will be a smokey haze again and I would not be surprised to see a continuation of fire risks given the low humidity.

Thursday and Friday it will be a little cooler and we see a mix of sun and clouds for both days. Given that the storm in Eastern Canada will still be hanging around we will continue to experience spokes of energy moving southward through the Northeast. We will throw in the chance that there  could be scattered showers or a thunderstorm on both days though it is quite possible that most people won’t see one. High temperatures both days will be mostly in the 70s except cooler 60s in Southern and Southeastern New England.

The weekend overall looks okay as weather systems in the atmosphere begin moving along again. This will allow things to warm up over the weekend and it should be dry at least through the daytime Sunday. For now we will go with some sunshine for both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Sunday highs ahead of a cold front will likely reach the middle to upper 80s.

As weather systems start moving along it might also open up the moisture spigots and that could happen as early as Sunday. We do have a slow moving cold front moving east and this will be able to gather some moisture ahead of it however models are having issues with timing. For now we will go with the idea we could see some showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two later Sunday night or Monday.
