Advisories Ice Storm Warnings Continue Tonight Next Snow Chance Thursday

Some minor changes in the forecast outlook for tonight as the National Weather Service has taken the Winter Weather Advisory down for parts of Long Island, mainly the southern and eastern half, and also for a small portion of Southern Connecticut. Otherwise Winter Weather Advisories and Ice Storm Warnings stand from earlier. Ice Storm Warnings have been expanded across Pennsylvania.

Not much has been happening today as temperatures are teetering around the freezing mark. You are above or below depending upon location. We will probably hold there through this evening and the first part of tonight as the main thrust of precipitation arrives late this evening.

On the regional radars we can see snow back in Ohio and Kentucky moving northeastward rather quickly. As it reaches the east side of the Appalachians the air is milder aloft and we will see it turn into freezing rain and rain. Snow will spread into Western Pennsylvania and Western NY.

We can follow the 32 degree line on the HRRR are model overnight and after an initial push southward this evening it does make its way north to Route 84 in NY State and Route 78 in Pennsylvania after midnight.

There are no major changes in the Ice Accretion forecast and the numbers are pretty much the same from early. Eventually many areas south of Route 84 will turn to plain rain before it all ends early Tuesday morning.

We will turn dry and colder Tuesday night and it actually will be very cold by Thursday morning ahead of the next and final system in this long series that began in late January. This system bears similarities to the current one with the main difference being that it is less amplified and the ridge offshore a little weaker. The GFS has been coming around to the less amplified look and it joins the European model which has been less amplified from the start.

All the models do show a solid thumping of snow from this system for Thursday into Thursday night before either turning to sleet or just ending as a little rain or drizzle. I think this has the look of something that could produce at least several inches on the front end and possibly more if the less amplified idea is correct. Less amplified means less warm air. We will be talking more about this tonight on the Joe & Joe Weather Show at 7:30pm on Youtube.
