A Rare Dry Day In The Northeast Northern Mid Atlantic
Rain Arrives Again Late Friday Into Weekend
It may be a little bit difficult to believe but we may actually enjoy a decent day of weather across the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states today. Our storm is now well to the east and on the far right on the satellite shot. It is moving along slowly to the east and that is allowing the next storm in the Ohio Valley to move eastward. But that is for tomorrow. Today we have sunshine, less wind, and autumn temperatures for highs will be just in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Enjoy it because we are headed downhill again.

Skies should start clear tonight but then we will cloud up as moisture from the south as well as from the east start to come in and the onshore flow strengthens. Temperatures will likely be chilly with lows in the 40s to at best near 50 in warmer urban locations. The southeast flow picks up further on Friday as it could become breezy and then rain comes up from the south. It reaches Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey by 2pm and then reaches the Lower Hudson Valley to NYC Long Island and Southern New England by 8pm
The first round of rain lasts about 6 to 8 hours and then we get a short break before more rain fires up on Saturday. The front slows down to a crawl because the upper trough weakens and the low tracks west taking what seems like forever to get out of the way and head into Canada. Rainfall amounts from this in total will be in a range of an inch and a half to two or locally maybe as much as 2 and a half inches.
Given that we have just come off a 4 to 6 inch rainfall, it is clear that the flash flooding threshold is going to be quite low. In other word’s it won’t take much rain to cause flooding in the usual suspect spots and maybe even in the not so usual suspect spots that flood in a rainfall. I would expect flash flood watches to go up for Friday night and Saturday. Sunday we could see lingering clouds and perhaps a lingering shower or two. Saturday and Sunday highs will be in the 60s. Finally we should see some better cooler weather arrive Monday and look for colder weather to come later next week.
