A Chilly Start However April Ends Warm 80s Midweek Showers Thunderstorms Late Week

The highlight this week will be some warm spring weather and a warm finish to the month of April. We do have to get through today as another cold shot of air works its way through the Northeast but this is nothing like last week’s cold shot. Yes there is some wind and yes it is chilly this morning but we should see temperatures rebound to the lower 60s in most areas this afternoon. We should see ample sunshine and nothing more than a few passing clouds as a storm to the northeast slowly moves away. There are no radar issues today.

Tonight begins the warming process as winds turn westerly and warmer air from the Plains heads eastward. Lows tonight will be in the upper 30s to mid 40s with nothing more than some high clouds around. Tuesday will be warmer with partly to mostly sunny skies. Highs will reach the 70s in most places and the west wind should keep the sea breeze confined to the immediate coast.

Wednesday will be the warmest day this week and we thought we would show the high temperature forecast from Virginia to New England. 80s reach NYC and the Hudson Valley. Mid 80s will be common in Southern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and points southward. The sea breeze will not be much of an issue except for the most exposed areas and there should be plenty of sunshine for us to enjoy the warm weather.

Thursday presents the dilemma that we face this time of year and that is the backdoor cold front to the north. You will notice a train of waves to the west with showers and thunderstorms. As each low goes by it pushes a weak warm front ahead of it and a cold front behind it. The position of that front at midday Thursday suggests we will be on the warm side of the frontal boundary but close enough that there will be clouds and around and that will impact high temperatures on Thursday. 60s to near 70 will be likely north of the frontal boundary and 70s to near 80 to the south. We will describe Thursday as cloudy to occasionally partly sunny with the risk for an inland shower or thunderstorm.

That risk grows Friday as we will be in a warm humid southwest flow as the next wave moves northeast. This one is stronger and will likely produce showers and thunderstorms at some point later Friday into Friday night. I think that there is the risk for some severe weather with this front though the Storm Prediction Center is not indicating risk at the moment. Friday highs will be in the 70s to near 80.

Chilly dry air follows behind the front for next weekend as May begins on a cold note but once again it is a quick shot that lasts a day or so and the long range suggests warmer temperatures will follow Sunday and for the first part of next week!
